A costly square built four years ago is now being demolished due to the planning of metro line 8 in Guangzhou.

In order to welcome the Asian Games, 800 million RMB was invested by Guangzhou Liwan district government to build this biggest square in Xiguan, where stands a heritage building - Chan Clan Academy.

“What a waste!” Many citizens criticised. Guangzhou Metro explained that metro line 8 had not been approved by Development and Reform Commission when the square was being constructed. Liwan district government didn't foresee the square to be demolished four years later.
