Yueyang, Hunan
A valuable wetland in Hunan Province is under threat as the local government leased it to a local businessman at 3.7 million yuan per year.

The wetland, named Caisang, is a natural habitat for migratory birds, located at the Yueyang, Hunan Province. However, this place is now degraded as a field planting lotus roots and a pond raising crabs.

The water and the ecological system in this area are being destroyed, said some ecological experts. “Planting lotus roots requires certain water level and less benthos. And the high-density lotus leaves make it more difficult for migratory birds hunting for food. What’s worse, the area will become a marshy land once the lotus roots are harvested,” Peng Xianglin, Chairman of Yueyang Wetland Protection and Promotion Association explained.
