Guangzhou plans to build a new Cantonese Opera Theatre at Zhujiang New Town CBD, as well as a Cantonese Opera Museum, a Hongxiannv Memorial Hall and a Cantonese Opera cruise boat.

The new theatre will be built to the east of Hongxiannv Art Center which was invested and built by Guangzhou government in 1998.

This plan aims to vitalize Cantonese Opera and honor Hongxiannv, a great Cantonese Opera performing artist who had devoted her whole life in this art.

The gross area of the new theatre will be 30,000 square meters and the building height will be around 60 meters. It will contain rehearsal venue and dormitory.

The Cantonese Opera cruise boat will be put on the Pearl River Night Cruise. Tourists can not only enjoy the night view of Peal River but also enjoy the performance of Cantonese Opera.

In the long term, the government plans to make several quality productions of the Cantonese Opera and will focus on training, creating, marketing and researching.

Background:

Cantonese opera is one of the major categories in Chinese opera, originating in southern China's Cantonese culture.

Like all versions of Chinese opera, it is a traditional Chinese art form, involving music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics, and acting.

Recently, Cantonese Opera is not very popular among the ordinary people. But it grabs the society attention again since Hongxiannv passed away at the end of 2013.
