Carpooling apps on mobile phones are gaining popularity among citizens, according to Shenzhen Daily Sunshine Newspaper.

After a simple registration, users can post their routes via an app to look for car owners who are willing to carpool.

Gas bills will be shared, which is said to always be cheaper than taxi fare.

“Carpooling apps should be encouraged because they can reduce passengers’ costs, relieve urban traffic pressures and reduce energy consumption,” said a netizen.

Some residents said carpooling during rush hour should be supported.

The paper said that carpooling apps lack a clear profit-making plan and are prone to disputes when a traffic accident happens, despite its increasing popularity.

Some countries have already launched some regulations for carpooling. In Singapore, driving a car without any passengers on road will be fined while driving a car with full capacity can enjoy the privilege of using the bus lane.

In the USA, a car with a certain number of passengers can use the High Occupancy Vehicle lane at a certain period from Monday to Friday.
