Sustainable Approaches to Rural Development

BWPI hosted a Salon supported by SZGBA on 10th July, the theme of which was ‘Sustainable Approaches to Rural Development. 

Invited experts shared the latest ideas and practices from both home and abroad, leading to further reflections on the future development of rural areas.

Concerned with the implications of urbanisation in China leading to mega cities, Barry Wilson proposed focusing investment and development in urbanising rural areas, leading to a preponderance of towns under 1 million in size with a developed range of economic, social and leisure opportunities.

Catherine HUANG introduced how the China Merchants Charitable Foundation assisted rural communities by facilitating them to undertake their own development projects rather than undertaking direct funding or carrying out works programmes for them.

Wu Wenyuan shared the importance of her experience on approaches to maintaining unique historical and natural features whilst planning for Changsha Xinsha Rural Area.
