Urban Design Excellence on show at HKU
31/07/2019

Students from the Master of Urban Design, Master of Science in Urban Planning, and Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies programmes hosted the annual DUPAD Degree Show opening and the Exhibition of work at the University of Hong Kong

I was pleased to be invited to attend the public review and witness the fine achievements of my own and other students, who were able to share the findings of their Research and Design Theses with senior government officials and private practitioners.

The Master of Urban Design course is accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design. The capstone Thesis submission is a 12 week endeavour in two parts:

Part I – research in the manner of an academic paper, and

Part II - an urban design project, in the manner of an urban design report

In Part I students gain essential skills in the use of research to inform Part II in a way that deepens knowledge, understanding, structure and presents coherent arguments for complex urban design solutions.

The course strengthens professional skills such as data collection and analysis, research appraisal, ethical conduct, time management, graphic presentation, organization and presentation of complex documents.

1) students evaluate critically both published research about urban design and associated theories within the subject area in order to aim at identifying gap(s) in knowledge. After adequate scoping, systematic research based on primary data and/or secondary data, students present a sounding board for discussion and analysis of the selected subject and help draw appropriate conclusions and recommendations relevant to theory, policy and project.

2) requires students to develop a research-informed urban design project with site analysis leading to an urban design brief, vision, programme, design options and appropriately detailed preferred option drawings/models.

The Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) was established in the Faculty of Architecture following the reorganization of the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management (CUPEM) on 1 July 2008 to continue the teaching of urban planning and related areas in housing management and transport which can be dated back to 1980. The Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning (CUSUP), which was established 28 years ago in 1980 and renamed as CUPEM in 1991, was re-established to continue interdisciplinary research in urban studies and planning.
