Several metered parking slots were transformed into a temporary public park on Daxue Road in Shanghai on Friday September 9th, as a pilot test for worldwide PARK(ing) Day, held on the 3rd Friday of September each year
Full of curiosity, pedestrians joined in for simply enjoying more leisure in the afternoon. Communication between strangers conjured naturally, in which the magic of public space in cities exists.
Initially organised by Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio in 2005, the mission calls attention to the need to generate critical debate around how public urban space is created and allocated, demonstrating that parking is both inefficient and socially exclusive.
