Community Road Dotted with Manholes

There is a community road dotted with all kinds of manholes in Yandian Community, Shaoxing city, Zhejiang province.

The road with more than 60 manholes is less than 100 meters.

Why are there so many manholes? The reason is that nobody is coordinating this issue. Each household have their own manholes accessing to different pipes.

An official from Shaoxing Planning Bureau said that there are too many pipes under the ground which are maintained by different departments. For example, the sewage and rainwater pipes are invested and maintained by government whilst the heating, gas and water pipes are invested and maintained by city-owned companies.

“It is difficult to coordinate all the pipes underneath as all the pipes were installed at different time by different institutes and it is not realistic to rebuild the whole system as millions of money has been invested in the existing pipes” said the official.
