All cities in China are required to identify historic districts and buildings within 5 years, according to an official with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
Historic cities, towns and villages show China's social, cultural and technology development in the history. City governments must identify and define these sites to make sure they will be well protected, added the official.
China now has 252 towns and 276 villages listed as famous historic and cultural localities under special state protection.
The aforesaid requirement is a further elaboration of a plan released by China's State Council earlier this year. The plan targets to further strengthen urban management among Chinese cities.
