Zootopia, of course, is not a stranger to many of you. It is a compound word of "zoo" and "utopia" which literally means the utopia for animals. Apart from telling the story of a wonderful world where all mammals like rabbit and fox live in harmony together, the movie also depicts its vision for the future of cities including the application of smart technology and urban planning. |
In the movie, Zootopia's citizens reside in districts geared to their zoogenic needs, for example, polar animals live in snow-blown "Tundratown" near the "Sahara Square". A massive air conditioning heating wall stretches across the city where hot air would heat Sahara Square portion of the city and snow blowers would keep the Tundra Town side cool.
From the swimming pool and the drying system for hippos, the vertical conveyor for giraffes to the special elevator for squirrels, those are intelligent imagination from the producers and directors. |
What we think is that a Zootopia-like city is still far away from us, but what we do not notice is that our lifestyles are actually influenced by many smart technologies.
In TEDxXiguan 2016 conference, we invited urban planner Barry Wilson to share with us his vision for urban development and the future of cities. Let's follow Wilson and unfold our wings of imagination in this 18-minute talk. Originally, TEDx Xiguan |
