To promote the use of new energy vehicles, Vice-Premier Ma Kai stressed that efforts should be made on regulating industry order; strengthening technology development; and ensuring manufacturing quality.

Vice-Premier Ma held a meeting on July 6 during a 3-day tour of automobile manufacturing enterprises in Shaanxi province. He noted that this year at the end of May, 628,000 new energy vehicles have been produced, making China the world’s No. 1 in terms of new energy car supply.

However the new energy vehicle industry is facing challenges that include a shortage of charging facilities, incomplete market regulation, battery life and supporting policies, he said.

Efforts need be made to promote the use of new energy vehicles in public transportation, the taxi industry, environmental sanitation, logistics and government agencies and build a unified and fair national new energy vehicle market. Safety technologies should be strengthened and regulation system should be improved. Construction of the national power battery innovation centre should be soundly propelled, Vice-Primer Ma stressed.

He also suggested that the new energy vehicle industry should be regulated to optimize market access, deal with unfair market competition and improve subsidy policies

Other problems not discussed however include sustainable planning for battery disposal and the importance of providing renewable energy sources to electric vehicles.
