Two more new lines - Line 28 and the Yanfang Branch Line - will start to be built in 2017, adding to the 20 projects already in progress, officials announced on Wednesday.

Line 28 will run through eight stations under Beijing's central business district as well as the Beijing East Railway Station in Chaoyang district, while the Yanfang Branch Line connects Zhoukoudian, the site of the Peking Man Relics Site, to the city-center bound Yanfang Main Line, which is expected to open in 2017. Both new lines are expected to open no later than 2021.

As well as the three lines in their final stretch of construction and testing, five more lines and extensions began construction in 2016 which included Line 3, which has been on the drawing board for more than 50 years.

This brings the number of ongoing projects in 2017 to 20, with a total length of more than 350 kilometers, or about 60 percent of the length of subways already in operation. According to officials, 2017 is the biggest year of construction in the history of Beijing subway construction. Officials said that by the time all these ongoing projects and their approved extensions are finished in the next few years, the total length will reach 999 kilometers, serving 18.5 million passengers daily. More humanistic designs are also included in the new projects.

Besides, four new subway lines will be built to link Beijing and neighboring Hebei province by 2021, as part of the region's integrated development, Hebei's top economic planner said.

According to the plan, one of the four subways - the Pinggu Line -that will link Beijing's Pinggu and Tongzhou districts with Sanhe in Langfang, Hebei. Preparatory work for the Pinggu Line has already started and is expected to be completed by 2021, according to the National Development and Reform Commission. The other three lines, which are in the planning phase, would link Yizhuang in Beijing with downtown Langfang; Daxing in Beijing with Gu'an in Langfang; and Fangshan in Beijing with Zhuozhou in Baoding.

Development of the urban rail transportation system in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region must be accelerated as there is significant demand for transportation services for short - and medium-distance journeys in the region, according to the plan.

Intercity railway lines that connect Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, not including subway lines, will be extended to a total of more than 400 km.

Intercity railway stations will be established mainly around Beijing's new airport in Daxing district and Chongli in Zhangjiakou, a co-host of the 2022 Winter Olympics. One of the 5 line that began construction in 2016 was, included the line that will link to Beijing's new airport as well.

Construction of the stations is expected to guarantee convenient routes for passengers traveling between the new airport and Winter Olympics venues.

The upgrade of the transportation system will aid in moving Beijing's noncapital functions and the transfer of industries and people to Hebei, the plan said, adding that it will also create job opportunities and help develop the local economy.
