A residential complex in Jing’an District has become the first community in Shanghai to install a stairlift for senior and disabled residents.

Compared to the tradition elevator, the stairlift is less complicated and the cost of maintenance for each year is around 1500 yuan which is a lot cheaper, Mr Zhoujian, an official from the local community Party said.

“The stairlift is very user-friendly for older people and easy to control,” said Wang Qian, 72, who has leg problems.

“It’s given me easy access to join outdoor activities and enrich my life,” she added.

Some other elder residents concern that the stairlift is too slow and it can only take one person each time which means the supply is not adequate to the demand.
