Masters student Surveyors hosted a fantastic Final Exhibition at the University of Hong Kong, Department of Real Estate and Construction Management on 21 November, 2018. I was able to act as a facilitator to three of the student groups over the autumn semester and was delighted with their outcomes.
The studio assignment was investigate innovative real estate methods to tackle the Hong Kong housing crisis, with a brief to develop creative, forward looking and socially inclusive solutions that address the issue from a built environment perspective. Congratulations to all students for excellent solutions.
The students were expected to integrate and apply knowledge from previous taught courses to tackle authentic and/or ill-defined problems in the land conversion process; develop self-directed, self-motivated learning capability and collaborative learning skills; develop problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, time management, communication, negotiation skills.

A proposed new generation of public
rental housing incorporated the ideas of co-living and inter-generational living to reduce the problems of the public housing shortage and rising number of single-living elderly.

Outcomes demonstrated calculable and significant increases in space efficiencies and reduction in waiting times, as well as addressing social cohesion and ageing issues.

Group 11- IN A NUTSHELL
A project initiative to provide affordable and quality transitional accommodation to the single needy, particularly aimed at alleviating pressure on sub-divided apartments.

The model thoroughly demonstrated how private capital could be gainfully employed in converting industrial units for low cost capsul communities and utilised new ways of thinking about the relationships between landlord and tenant.

The Department of Real Estate and Construction (formerly known as Department of Surveying) was formally established as a new department in June 1984. It is directly associated with the surveying profession through the professional accreditation of its undergraduate program by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (UK) (RICS).
