The first group of 398 old buildings were registered as ‘historic buildings’ by Guangzhou government in February, half of which are mainly privately owned. Each building is given a doorplate embossed with the words “Historic Building of Guangzhou”. According to the new preservation law for historic buildings, local government should undertake the responsibility of identifying and preserving historic buildings. Property owners can apply for subsidies for renovating part of the building based on the legal restrictions, which means the overall style, structure, decoration or material should remain as the same.
