As one of the world's largest public libraries, a visit to Guangzhou Library is always a busy affair. During the summer, when schools are on holidays, upwards of 35,000 people are thronging the aisles. This year Barry Wilson was able to introduce the Library to the students of Penn State and Hong Kong Universities with the expert knowledge provided by Library Deputy Director Zhang Jiangshun and his team.

Back of house inspection revealled the book sorting and return system, handling around 24,000 books each day on automated conveyor systems. Yet its the variety of activities, often not involving books at all, that show the Library to be a truely community focused building, with its diversified services including Exhibitions of local Cultural Heritage, Research Centres, Geneology Centre, Language Centre, Creative Design area, Multimedia Appreciation Centre and IT Learning Area. Its a museaum, School and Restaruant all roled into one.

The building is also outstanding; modern and light with dynamic public spaces focused on a central atrium which divides inclined north and south towers connected with skybridges and stradling a basement connected to the metro system. No need to whisper here; its a truely inclusive public space where reading, sharing and exchanging ideas are promoted in an air conditioned space with 100% wifi connectivity.
