A set of municipal regulations have been published recently to protect trees and encourage tree planting. Violators who cut down or remove old trees deliberately will receive fines.

Trimming old and precious trees without permission will result in fines of 2,000 yuan per tree and the fine for destroying and cutting down old and rare trees can be up to 500,000 yuan, according to the regulations.

The range of old and precious trees include those aged over 100, those having historical and research value and those belonging to a rare tree species.

Organizations and individuals are also encouraged to claim and plant trees to enlarge the greening area in Shenzhen.

These particular regulations, passed at the eighth session of the Standing Committee of the Sixth Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress on June 22, will be enacted starting from October 1.
