Free Wi-Fi service will be offered on the Luobao, Shekou and Huanzhong Metro lines by the end of the month, according to an announcement that project contractor Shenzhen Southern Galaxy Technology Co. made Thursday at the China Information Technolgy Exhibition (CITE).

Wi-Fi service on the Longhua Line is undergoing testing and will be available to the public within this year. Network construction on the Longgang Line has been completed, but no start date for the service had been disclosed as of Thursday.

Passengers will need to connect with a “MyWiFi” hotspot after entering Metro stations.

The Wi-Fi technology is developed by Kuang-Chi, which will cooperate with Vision China Media Group, the country’s largest mobile TV operator, to provide the service on public transportation including Metro trains and buses in 89 cities in China.

“Shenzhen will be the first city to offer the free service on buses, possibly by the end of this year,” Kuang-Chi president Dr. Liu Ruopeng said.

Kuang-Chi signed cooperative agreements Thursday with enterprises in industries including telecommunications, finance, and media — including big names such as ZTE, UnionPay and China Unicom — to develop projects involving Wi-Fi services and photonic payment solutions.
