China has revised its Environmental Protection Law for the first time in 25 years, but many are still concerned about water and air quality in China. This revised Environmental Protection Law will give the Central Government more powers, including the closure of polluting factories and to punish officials, and even banned in some areas to develop industries. Deputy Director General of the Environment Supervision Bureau, Cao Liping, answered questions from netizens around the world in a special ‘Ask China’ series of CCTV News on Tuesday. Responding to questions about China’s water quality, Cao said that the government should shoulder responsibility and intensify law enforcement efforts to address water pollution. He stressed that under the Environmental Protection Law it is the legal responsibility of the local government. As the government enhances efforts in reducing pollution, Cao stressed the importance of the public’s participation in environmental supervision and law enforcement in improving quality for everyone.
