It might seem like there’s more news about electric vehicles lately than actually present on the road. China recently has some interesting developments about it.

Shenzhen Progress: First Self-driving Buses Trial and Full Electrification of Buses in 2017

Shenzhen has started the first trial of self-driving buses, the first in China, and possibly the first test of its kind in the world,

Human error is a major cause of road accidents worldwide. There have been about 260,000 road fatalities each year in China, according to a World Health Organisation estimate published in May last year. The main advantage of driverless buses is increased safety.

Each self-driving bus is equipped with a range of active safety features, including lasers, radar, sensors and a visual scanning system that monitors the vehicle’s surroundings without any blind spots. At the same time, a human driver is ready to take over if the vehicle encounters a situation that it cannot automatically handle.

Meanwhile, the whole Shenzhen bus fleet will achieve full electrification by the end of 2017. Shenzhen has been working on the transition to a 100 percent electric fleet over the last few years with the technical support from local company BYD, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric vehicles.

Electric Buses Hit Beijing

Beijing has just launched its first 10 electric buses, which will service the city centre, utlising PM 2.5 automatic filtration devices as well as an enhanced safety system. Buses will be charged at high-power quick charging points, which only take 15-20 minutes.

The buses will be used on a route that is exclusively adopted for them in future. By  the end of 2018, over 4,000 such buses are anticipated to be rolled out along with an increasing number of charging stations and related facilities.

Tax Rebate for Electric Vehicles to be Extended

The national government is set to extend the tax rebate on electric vehicles in order to reach its clean-fuel auto goals. The 10% rebate was due to expire at the end of this year and will now run through at least 2020.

“China wants the number of new energy vehicles to grow, and I’m sure they’ll take any additional steps if they’re not meeting their targets,” said Yunshi Wang, director of the China Center for Energy and Transportation at the University of California, Davis.

A shortage of both in-home and public recharging stations remains a massive, unsolved challenge, the research group says. Public awareness and enthusiasm for electric cars needs to grow, and this, in turn, will encourage governments to maintain public subsidies as the technology matures.
