Tengger Desert
Located in Inner Mongolia and on the border of Ningxia Province, Tengger desert hinterland originally has abundant groundwater resources and lots of national protected plants, which is the main settlement area of local herdsman.

In recent years, industrial parks were built around this area. A large number of chemical sewage is drained into the desert resulting in a radius of several kilometers pollution. The chemical companies also massively exploit groundwater, causing water crisis in surrounding villages. Some villagers even want to flee away from their hometown.

Professor Liu Shurun from Inner Mongolia Normal University said once the desert’s groundwater is contaminated, the desert’s eco-environment will not be reversible.
