BWPI hosted a salon for 1st April fools, the theme of which was "Artificial Intelligence - The Nuclear Bomb of Modern Times". Debate was presented by Jonathan P. Taylor.

People have talked about Artificial Intelligence for decades since the word was firstly coined by John McCarthy. Nowadays many of the tech industry’s biggest companies, like Amazon, Google, IBM, Baidu and Microsoft, have been jockeying to become the go-to company for AI. Meanwhile, although artificial intelligence has been developing rapidly, it is still at a crude, early stage of data storage; there is not yet true artificial intelligence that can “self learn”. Meanwhile if machines continue to be more efficient than humans then where will all the jobs go?

Heated discussion ensued, with little consensus as to whether AI would be a good or bad thing for future times. Image: BWPI
Heated discussion ensued, with little consensus as to whether AI would be a good or bad thing for future times. Whilst attendees generally agreed that the development of technology would lead the future development of true artificial intelligence, with the potential to reshape the world's industrial, military and service sectors this was strongly refuted by the presenter, who felt true self conscious decision making “the skynet” self realization moment, was still an impossibility.
