LIVING THE CITY
2015-Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture

Our good friend Maurizio Scarciglia of NAUTA Architecture & Research based in Netherlands presented two Chinese case studies of differing scale and approach on December 8th, with the intent to outline how agricultural use of public space could instill principles of social inclusion, especially in cities where the percentage of rural migrants keeps growing.

With Beijing Productive Voids, the NAUTA team researched redundant and underutilized urban voids in the Chinese capital in order to test the possibility to newly introduce forms of agricultural management. Alternatively, NAUTA's Shenzhen Bao'an project (in cooperation with SADI Shenzhen) investigated the possibility of using agriculture as a tool for holistic design of the coastline facing the Pearl River delta, capable of combining simultaneously social uses and a productive landscape.
In the discussions following there was general consensus that agriculture does have a strong role to play in urbanization however developing successful mechanisms for both its protection and progressive inclusion become the key factors.
