Barry Wilson meets Catharine Ward Thompson

Barry Wilson invited Professor Catharine Ward Thompson, his past college tutor, for a critical dialogue to offer her views on access to green environments, health & wellness, elderly care and other relevant issues during a short visit to Guangzhou in May 2018. It was the 1st reunion between Professor Ward Thompson and Barry Wilson for almost 30 years.

Catharine Ward Thompson shared her detailed knowledge of the importance and cost benefits of providing inclusive access to the environment during the interview.
The major topics discussed during the dialogue were as follows:

  • The importance of outdoor natural environment
  • Relationship between the access to green space and reducing health inequality and enhancing quality of life
  • The cost effectiveness of green infrastructure
  • How landscape helps aging society in China?
  • Would changing technology shape the environment in the future?
"There is increasing evidence that providing access to landscape environments, particularly to good quality natural environments, is a very good way to reduce health inequalities"

The former Head of Department, Catharine Ward Thompson is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), and Founding Director of the OPENspace research centre.

Her research focuses on inclusive access to outdoor environments, environment-behaviour interactions, landscape design for older people, children and teenagers, and salutogenic environments.


As a Landscape Architect, she supports good access to high quality open space that offers opportunities for a rich experience for all.
