Barry Wilson also attended two sessions themed An Integrated Urban Mircroclimate and Building Energy Model for Early Stage Design and Re-thinking Courtyard Housing: Development of Traditional Islamic Courthouses into Zero-Energy Buildings.

In his opinion, the ongoing urban planning should be adjusted to an unknown but different future, to provide shock absorbers to change and to flexibly align our development thinking to that unknown future. Lingering in the background of discussion throughout the conference sessions, was the Donald Trump effect, and his huge decision to pull the United States out of the COP21 Paris Climate Agreement. There was increasing recognition at the conference about the need to achieve rapid and dramatic changes through paradigm shifts in lifestyle, policy and technology.

Christine Lo, Under Secretary for the Environment HKSAR government, shared her new “song”, to be sung in helping Hong Kong leadership drive towards more sustainable goals and reach aggressive targets using the mantra of the 4 ‘T’s :-
  • TARGETS
  • TIMELINE
  • TRANSPARENCY
  • TOGETHERNESS

Let’s hope this simple message can lead all sectors of society towards meeting the massive challenges of adjusting our lifestyles, consumption and aspirations to the needs of our rapidly changing world.
