Barry Wilson attributed Shenzhen's recent transformation from manufacturing to a creative hub to its ability to attract strong talent, resulting from high salaries provided in the high tech and creative design sectors dominating the emergence. He likened PRD to the "California" of China, with Shenzhen as its Silicon Valley.

Government incentives have lured many start-up operations focusing heavily on Research and Development and this has been coupled with a trend of relocation from Beijing of some of China's largest business headquarters, attracted by the physical and business environment.

He also outlined some of the problems for Hong Kong and Macau in competing  strategically within the PRD and the necessity for both to both focus and collaborate in different areas in order to maintain future economic advantages.

Special thanks go to Kevin Thompson, Jill Rigg, Suzanne Watkinson and Dora Deparis-Kohler for their hospitality as well as to St. Regis Macao, Cotai Central for their comfy pillows.
