Barry Wilson attended a British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong lunch with Commissioner Song Zhe, Commission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Barry Wilson was able to ask Commissioner Song if there might be any platforms put in place for SMEs in HK to be involved in the One Belt One Road programme? SMEs in Hong Kong have plentiful international experience which could be useful in partnering with Chinese companies.

Commissioner Song explained that the report he is preparing would look at the mutual benefits of the programme to all in Hong Kong and China and that SMEs will be given fair opportunities by ensuring there are measures in place for them. He identified areas Hong Kong based companies might best benefit included: - Logistics, Finance
and IT infrastructure.

Mr Song noted that the UK is Hong Kong’s third largest European trade partner, and that last year trade between the UK and Hong Kong valued 100bn HKD, with 160bn HKD direct investment from the UK into Hong Kong and 55.8bn HKD investment from Hong Kong to the UK.

Mr Song acknowledged the unique historical ties Hong Kong has with the UK and that the UK must look at the broad context of China-UK relations not just Hong Kong-UK relations.
