Shenzhen Progress: the First Self-driving Buses Trial and Fully Electrification of Buses in 2017

Shenzhen has started the first trial of self-driving buses, the first in China, possibly might have been the first test of its kind in the world

One of the passengers even left the bus during the trial. He said"It was an interesting experience. AI is actually effecting our life now."

Human error is a major cause of road accidents worldwide. There have been about 260,000 road fatalities each year in China, according to a World Health Organisation estimate published in May last year. The main advantage of driverless buses will increased safety.

Each self-driving bus is equipped with a range of active safety features, including lasers, radar, sensors and a visual scanning system that monitored the vehicle’s surroundings without any blind spot. At the same time, a human driver is stationed at the steering wheel, ready to take over if the vehicle encountered a situation that it cannot automatically handle.

Meanwhile, the fleet of Shenzhen buses will be full electrification by the end of 2017. Shenzhen has been working on the transition to a 100 percent electric fleet over the last few years with the technical support from a local company called BYD, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of electric vehicles.

“China wants the number of new energy vehicles to grow, and I’m sure they’ll take any additional steps if they’re not meeting their targets,” said Yunshi Wang, director of the China Center for Energy and Transportation at the University of California, Davis.

On the other hand, apart from the advantage of the electric cars has brought to China. A shortage of both in-home and public recharging stations remains a massive, unsolved challenge, the research group says.
